everyone has a perception of what is happening.. sometimes we all see it the same way and other times , completely different, The fans that posted this morning are all in agreement on this one thing... It was an off night... end of story... DB came out told us about his mishap and from that moment on... I know it would be a touch and go show.... I am sure he felt badly about it as all his band mates.... It's life what can you do... Yes, we pay for these shows.. and I always keep it in my mind , it is a live show you never know what can or will happen... Thanks to Dickey for making the effort and to all the band members for getting it together and jamming along.. Ok enough from me... wake up all other attenders ... LIZZIE where are you .... where is that Mr. Jim on a plane already and Kay , Nancy... Mitch... Barb ,Bob.... C A P N >>> speak ....

Mik, yours is a post I can sink my teeth in. Very nice. The show sucked, that does happen from time to time. Glad you got to rap with him and said he was not drunk. Nothing wrong in saying the show was bad, but for people to imply that he had one to many is over the line. As I stated earlier that is how all the bad rumors get started and take off like a rabbit.

As a loyal DB fan for over 40 years, last nite was a god awful show. A/C not working, sound system not working, and Dickey tore up his finger at the gig the day before. He could barely play but sucked it up and did the best he could. Actually, a pretty good Liz Reed, Jessica and Rambling Man encore. I think we give Dickey a pass on this one. Shit happens and it sounds like, from the reviews, he was really on his game at the gig the day before. He definitely was not drunk, spoke to him outside after the show. As for the lyrics, he only messed up on Blue Sky, and I'm pretty sure the finger issue played a part in it. I know that Dickeys loves the NYC fans and I know he'll make it up to us next time he's here. People have written him off along time ago, but he's always come back and showed why he's the best!!

Also Moon, to make my point about playing and singing at the same time, being hard, is exactly why Clapton had Duane come in on Layla and play guitar so he could concentrate on singing.
RedDog wrote on July 24, 2010 at 1:28 pm
Moon, maybe you are not a musician, I do not know. But believe me, if his mind is on his finger, then it will show up in his singing. This is true for all musicians. It is hard to play and sing at the same time especially when something else is on the mind, it can make you forget words. This does happen to musicians more than you know. If he had a few beers no foul. I would bet my life it did not have a thing to do with his performance. What get me is, I have heard people make comments like Ed for years. Blaming the bad night on being messed up. Mainly about brother Gregg. I can't count the times I have heard people say he was messed up and I, knowing for a fact, that was not the case. The imagination can do a lot of things when we go by a visual performance and not really knowing what is going on. Its so easy to say someone is messed up because we did not think the performance was up to par. It seems you wee more concerned about him smoking. Unless I am reading your post wrong. I can't think of any other reason for you to make a comment about his smoking.

Yes, for most of the old time fans ..it was a rough show.. As Red Dog has reminded me... DB will be 67 and he seemed to me a bit out of shape... I am also out of shape, but I am not a performer.... He seemed to be struggling with his over all uncomfortableness... his finger being the biggest problem.. Ok, forgetting some of the words to Blue Sky... was a first for me... never in all my years have I ever seen that one.. and yes, to me it is forgiveable... he is a human man , not a machine... But, he is out there ..a paycheck... I dont know... I think it is more a way of life that is hard to give up and he misses the road... until he has a night like last night... I'm sure alot of head shaking is going on...

Sorry to hear Dickey had to play hurt. It sucks to play in pain. 🙁 I know from experience. I had a gig one Friday night after work, and on my way out the door from work, pulling the door closed behind me, I smashed the tip of the middle finger of my left hand. Turned the nail black right away. My first reaction, after acknowledging the pain, was "F**K!! How am I going to play tonight?" I got home, took a small drill bit, drilled a hole in the middle of the nail to relieve the pressure. Then I rode the hour to the venue with my finger submerged in a glass of ice water. That didn't feel too great, in itself. Somehow, I made it through the night. Another time I got the tip of my right index finger caught in some machinery at work. It stripped 4 places in the skin of the tip, cut through my finger nail into my nail bed, plus it broke the bone in the tip. They had to remove the nail to stitch the nail bed. Needless to say, that one shut me down from playing for six weeks. I had to quit my house gig because of it.

Good Morning again Brothers and Sisters, You know, I was talking to my wife about the show , she thought it was great. So for the rookies it was good but maybe us "die hard" DB fans are a bit spoiled. That being said it still had its moments. I thought "Jessica" was beautiful. We were up in the balcony which was not quite as chaotic as it was below. There was a strange vibe going on last night, maybe it was the heat. The sound was quite bad but the last show at the Ethical and Cultural center I attended the sound was good. Whats up? I hope they can pull it off tonight and tomorrow. Good luck guys. Safe travels, KLBazur

having the honor to see dickey over 300 times since 1970 in every version of bands from the great american tour to last dec b'day show i regretfully say that even though he had a damaged finger and the pa was terrible there was no excuse for the unprofesssional way he performed...i dont know how a hurt finger effects dickey's not knowing lyrics and totally giving Blue Sky verses that seemed to be another language...at least when talking to luke he told me he didnt know what to expect as his band hadnt played in months and he just got called for this gig???? I must agree w/kfj from the bronx that it seemed they where only there to get a paycheck and seeing dickey drinking(and RD he had more then one beer i was in the 4th row and could see )and smoking was not a good sign...the only redeeming thing of value that i can see from this poor excuse of a show was if this paycheck he played for was signed over and donated to Reddog...it was a sad night of music to see one of my musical idols and legends up on stage this way...this was not an easy post to submit and i am doing with much regret and sadness

Rainy your e mail just showed up. I will read after I post this. Thank you and Kibazur for letting people know that he had cut his finger. I know this will effect his playing as he is a perfectionist about how he plays. He can get up set if he is not playing his best. He wants to give the paying audience the best show he can. I bet this morning he is more disappointed about the show than the audience was. Sqounk said he was on fire the day before. I am sure he wore his cut finger out on that show and it showed up last night. More than likely his finger was sore as hell. Which as we all know will put a damper on how one plays. If the sound was not good then no matter how he or anyone plays it will not come across as a good night.

Good Morning...Hey Rick.. Red Dog I did send you a message on email last night when I got home at about 1:30 am... I just checked this morning and it looks like it was sent at 7:30 :nono: Hope you are feeling stronger and not in so much pain... thinking of you... Last night started out bad for us... lots of L.I. traffic and getting to Liz's to pick her and Mr.Jim up was an event...we seemed to have made a wrong turn and well.. we finally found our way , with Lizzie in the phone LOL.. Should have known what was to come... I am not a critic by any means and it is extremely hard for me to say anything not complimentary about Betts playing,... Someone mentioned that for the casual fan it was a pretty good night of music.. I would agree with that. Unfortunately , for me I have grown to expect more... It was an OFF night for Dickey...he had hurt / cut his ring finger on his left hand and he made that announcement at the beginning of show and he would do the best he could..... all fingers are important in guitar playing.. this was critical.. and it was hurting him... and at one point ..I think it was One Way Out... he made a motion to either Duane or Andy.. and he walked off stage with Carlos.. in back... they were gone just a few minutes and then he came back out... super glued the cut... and began again... Still the sound system was horrendous, but the band is a great band and played with love in their hearts... Dickey seemed alittle pissy about his finger, seemed a little rough around the edges... But hey that is cool... he is out here once again, doing the best he can. He only sipped at one beer... if I could only express how oppressive the heat was people... I was sweating.. I hated that... it was very uncomfortable... for me.. I can not even imagine how it was for the band... I thought the AC in their was weak. So over all... I would say... that DB had a finger problem and the sound in there was really really bad.... They gave us the best they could and I appreciate that... Andy , Pedro , Duane , Mike, Frankie and James..... all rocked the house... I have discovered in life and in real life time.. that not all shows are going to be THE IT show.. it is impossible... it's art and living creative thing... you get it different each time the notes are played... But, Thanks to DB and GS for another great memory in my collection box... So nice to see Mitch, Marie, LIZZIE, Mr. Jim, very handsome and so sweet, Kay and Nancy, Capn Terry, Barb and Bob, ran into Eileen and Wharf Rat Chuckle.. Had a nice conversation with Andy Aledort outside of hall before show...he is always a gentlemen and very pleasant and fan friendly as well as Pedro.... Wished I would have meant more of the G B people... Did love BWIAB.... it always gets me..

Good morning Brothers and Sisters, Greetings from New York City. Good show last night, not the best but considering Dickey had cut his finger, which seemed to be bothering him and pissing him off, they managed to please most in the audience. Andy of course was smiling away playing his ass off as usual, Duane smoked it a couple times and the supporting players made up for DB problems. I thought Dickeys vocals were strong. Only saw Dickey sipping on one beer, don't know what was going on backstage. I did see DB put out a cig which as a formed smoker made me wince, only because I want DB around as long as possible (Dickey Betts was what I always liked about the ABB!) Hope all is well out there in Dickhead land. Safe travels, KLBazur

Here we gooooo.....I think I'll wait to hear from Sister Rainy. The paycheck comment gives it away Brother Dog. Woof ticket.
RedDog wrote on July 24, 2010 at 10:49 am
Ed, why do you assume Brother Dickey had to many Buds. Were you back stage and saw this or are you just feeding on the bad stuff that went around about the brother? If you were not back stage, then you know nothing and should have left that part out of your post. In you post you degraded him as a drunk then try to make it right by saying how much you like him. You post did the brother a mis-justice. Please do not come back and try to make your comment right. You have already put your foot in the bucket, unless you were sitting there and drinking with him. You post is exactly how the bad rumors get started. Did you stop to think he might not be feeling all that good? No you just jumped on him about drinking. The show as you say was not up to standards, this happens sometime and has nothing to do with him or any other performer being messed up. just what we call a bad night. Period.

What a disappointment !!! Starting with the opening act Luke Mullholland. Dickey's performance wasn't any better, sound board sucked, forgotten vocals, everyone just showed up for a paycheck. After seeing both acts twice previously I was expecting a much better show.

Just got in from the NYC show..I have to be honest..It was not good at all..Dickey has problems with his fingers from not playing so long I think the calluses sorta wore away.. He stopped playing at various times during the show..He even stopped the show and the band took an early break..He was sweating real bad too. He played most of the show without his hat..His voice was awful he was messing up on alot of the lyrics. It was not good to see. I think he had a few to many Budweisers tonight. I think they must have cut the show short. I love Dickey Betts. He is why I loved the ABB. His guitar playing and tone has always brought me to a place that no other musician ever has or will be able too.. Tonight he looked shot out..I just hope he bounces back. And gets it together..It really pains me to see this because I love Dickey and the boys..This is just my opinion. I would like to hear from others who where there and see if they feel the way I do. I must say the casual fan who does not know the Band all that well had a good time tonight dancing and singing to some of the songs.. Ed
