From a well known and respected ABB historian, on why it was too risky to invite Dickey to play at the Beacon: "Does playing songs at half-speed, filling them with off-key string bends and missing harmony runs and lyrics ruin a song? I'd say yes. (Then there's the obvious dislike some of the musicians have for each other, which doesn't usually help a performance.) Other people might feel differently for their own reasons, especially in this situation. Neither side is factually wrong but it's not trolling or crazy talk. A lot of people is that he can't hack it anymore. That's what I thought 10 years ago after that live album. The videos I've seen since then have not changed my mind and nobody's saying his playing has improved. The best anybody says is that he has good days and bad ones. I know it meant a lot to people when he sat in with the TTB last year, but I think most of us can admit his playing was nowhere close to the level of the rest of the band. You could see them adjust their playing in Liz Reed to accommodate him. Gregg's singing isn't what it was 5 or 10 years ago either and he's missed blown his share of lyrics and cut off some solos. In general it's less painful and don't screw up the songs as much. From a musical standpoint I'm not sorry they didn't throw away part of one of their last performances to include him. But anyway, that's me."

I'm sure he probably nominated himself for the classic rock award too. Gregg's only honored because he organizes these things himself, and Dickey is never honored because he's too cool for it. Got it. 😆

You think Gregg organized the All My Friends tribute for himself? Hilarious. You love Dickey so much you will say anything to defend him, even as dumb as it might make you look to others. Even I wouldn't give him he credit to be able to accomplish such a thing. I'm pretty sure Gregg just shows up when and where he's told to these days.

TennKev...Dickey has too much class to organize his own tribute like Gregg did. There are many other ways Dickey has been honored. 😎

Probably happen when God forbid, if Dickey were to ever be on death's door like Gregg was. People come running when they think you might die. And boy, would it be fancy. 😆 ........you're such a tool!!

OK great! Let me know when the fancy Dickey Betts tribute concert + CD/DVD combo becomes available. I bet it will be awesome, I sincerely mean that. I just hope they start planning it soon, Gregg isn't getting any younger and neither is Dickey.

Yes Dickey, train, say your prayers, and eat your vitamins and you'll go places and "make it" one day. 😆 Dickey has been honored enough in his lifetime. Any real "ABB historian" knows that. And no doubt there will be more honors to come. Very true Brother Tyler. Dickey also saved Duane Allman's life one time too and God knows he carried Gregg for most of his.

Bird - excellent point. Next time you're in the mood to explore some of our favorites' precursors check out Magic Sam, Otis Rush, Slim Harpo, Luther Allison, Albert Collins, Hubert Sumlin (Howlin' Wolf Band - not for beginners), Luther Johnson, and Gatemouth Brown - just to name a few. Some people just cop licks - others learn the history and take it to a better place.

Researching the artists who preceded our favorites is fun. Listening to Albert King for example, you can hear licks you maybe thought were Eric Claptons or yes, Dickey Betts. so my latest discovery was on a whim in a record store last weekend when I went to the big city (joke) Missoula. Saw an Odetta record in the bin. Heard of her, so I grabbed it. All I have to say is if you want to hear some deep roots stuff, folk / folk blues Odetta is so flippin' real. Amazing. She did Gallows Pole on this record (1961). Another good ole Zep cop for them.

Doesn't Gregg have his own website? Maybe even two other sites? Just seems odd we would receive so much info here for Gregg..... 😎

I think Dickey would get considered for honors like these more often if he tried a little harder. Maybe cut out the drinking and aspire to be more than the best band in Sarasota. I think he could really go places! Like Gregg has. Gregg gets recognized like every week anymore it seems. As you would expect of a legend...
