I always forget that things don't post the same way in the GB as they do in the forum. Here's the article: Published: 2011/02/22 Joseph "Red Dog" Campbell 1942-2011 Joseph “Red Dog” Campbell passed away yesterday afternoon. Campbell was one of the original Allman Brothers Band roadies (he embraced that term and preferred it to “crew member”). He worked with the band for over three decades and appears on the back cover of the group’s At Fillmore East album. Cameron Crowe paid tribute to Campbell by naming a character Red Dog in the film Almost Famous. Last year Campbell was diagnosed with cancer and on August 14 and 15 a number of musicians came together in Macon for a sold out show, the Throw The Dog A Bone Benefit to help defray his medical expenses. Back in 2001, Campbell chronicled his adventures with the ABB in A Book of Tails. Crowe offered his support when the book was published, writing: “I’ll admit it right now. I am a big fan of Red Dog, and have been even before he allowed me to interview him back in 1973 for a story in Rolling Stone. Hell, he was already legendary back then. But now I just have to say that I am extremely jealous of the Great Dog, because I’ve just finished reading A Book of Tails. True rock, the kind that lasts forever, is about honesty and humor and love and chasing the elusive buzz of greatness. Red Dog’s book captures all this and more. You can’t put this thing down, and best of all, it makes you want to listen to music. Not just the Brothers, but all music. Red Dog really caught something with his writing. This book, and a copy of “Live at Fillmore East” belong in the time capsule reading — Kick back and see what you missed. Two centuries from now I doubt anybody will have said it better. As you can tell, I’m still a fan. A statement on the Allman Brothers Band website, which announced his passing adds, “He will always be remembered by all those who knew him. The Old Dog is out of the house, howling with his Brothers.”

Thanks for sharing Rainy. Pam read one night last week that Jaimoe was getting ready to give RedDog a foot massage during his visit. RedDog had told me of many Kind things Jaimoe had done for him including recent things. You are so right that Jaimoe is a Special Man. It is good to think of the Goodtimes. Peach.

I can't remember if it was last night or Sunday night... he was in good spirits.. always puts a smile on my lips..wish he would come home to DB so we can all embrace each other and mourn Joseph together.. Lizzie, I can not read my emails, pms from Joseph just yet..it is to emotional.. I will share with all of you.. that many many months ago , Joseph asked me to save all his emails the current ones..he knew I had all the ones from 6 yrs ago already saved.. he said he wanted me to compile those in a book of love messages from Red Dog.. we laughed hard over that... also not sure if I should share.. but we are brothers and sisters ..Jaimoe came over to Red Dog's one day last week and stayed about 2 1/2 hrs.. he came unannounced and just wanted to see his very dear brother and friend.., he is a special man... as was Joseph.. The last time I heard from him was in October and he was talking about my friends Claire and her husband Doug, who died 20 days before he did: "Thank you sweetheart. I got to take it as it comes and hope I make the right decisions. No matter how you look at this stuff it's not pretty. I sure hope your friends are doing better. One thing about knowing the time might be near is you have a lot of time to think about it. Now that kind of sucks. but it is what it is. Give your friend the V sign for me. love to you Lizzie the Dream Lady"

Very sad to hear of Red Dog's passing. He kept the truest spirit of The Brotherhood alive from the start. We are all very grateful for that. Thanks to all the people who helped him and stood by him in his time of need. Mitch

RIP Brother... My sincerest condolences to Red Dog's Family...and the immediate brotherhood. Today I will read "Tails" again and celebrate his life as he would have wanted. Each of us has our own unique memories...especially of his true tails...cherish them all! Red Dog stood tall not in stature but in dedication to the brotherhood. Nope...Genuine!
