Blackey I can only tell you, that Duane told me, the reason for leaving Clapton, after he had only done two gigs, with Layla, that nobody got him off like his band.

Hello Voader! That jamming from Duane and Clapton was really nice. I had to play it twice. Way more EC and DA but that is OK. Clapton is just as fine as they come. Getting all kinds of cool little sounds from what sounds like a Fender Strat. I wonder if Warren and Derek can really play like that or that good with that kind of sweet character or if they can but its just different. If Dickey was on this track, he would have been that good. Probably Derek too but I'm not sure about Warren. Warren is a fine player and is one of the most versitale players I've heard. And I've had the pleasure to speak with him on a few occasions. Very nice man. But I'm not sure Warren could be as cool and so sweet and unique as Duane and Clapton did on that track below. Hey Red Dog. I'm glad to see you are doing well. I've been working out of town and really missed checking in here. Back 1970 all of us young hippies and ABB fans back then were real worreid our man Duane Allman was going to leave the ABB for Derek and the Dominos. And it would have been a wonderful band. Sky Dog playing with Clapton and the other guys in that band would have really been powerful. We use to hear rumors that Duane was tempted and even missed some gigs with the ABB so he could play with Clapton, so there were a few "five man" shows back then. But Duane just couldn't completely cut and run from the ABB and finally nixed the idea and Clapton was disappointed. The other rumor was Duane made it clear all along to Clapton that he could not leave the ABB. A third rumor was Derek and the Dominos didn't last very long because Clapton just didn't want to play without Duane and actually when he( Clapton) quit, he didn't play at all for several months and got heavy into drugs. No matter what was the truth, us big time ABB fans back then were so happy when it became clear that Duane was staying with the ABB and NOT going with Clapton. But now as I look back, maybe if he had gone with Clapton, he would still be alive. Or the ABB would have broken up for good in 1971 or 72 and never became the huge band they became in 1973. Yeah when Brothers and Sisters came out, the band was really too big for us old fans. Large coliseums and too many people going to the shows. Ramblin' Man on every radio station in the country. And the band was different. With Chuck and Lamar, the band had a different sound of course but man there were still some nights that I saw when that version of the band really blew the roof of the house with new songs like Waster Words, Southbound, Jessica, Ramblin' Man and new treatments of Statesboro Blues, Whipping Post, etc. I remember a show on the Brothers and Sisters show in Nashville and that version of the band was as hot as anything I've ever heard. Maybe not as creative as the original band but as hot. And Liz Reed and Blue Sky were really different. Where Duane use to do a solo, Chuck Leavell played a piano solo. Electric guitars no longer dominated those songs. If Duane had gone with Clapton, would he still be alive and would the ABB had stayed together long enough for Brothers and Sisters are kinda like George Bailey in the James Steward Christman film "Its a Wonderful Life". Make one little change in someone's life and not only does it really change their life and may even mean that they live longer, but it changes so many other people's lives too. Take you Red Dog. I've always felt if you hadn't been there at just the right time with you Military check, the ABB may have just broke up a few months after it started. I know from what Gregg as said in several interviews, that he began to have serious doubts that the band would make it, especially after "Idlewild South" died on the vine as he put it. And Gregg said Duane was the only one that really believed that band was going to make it except for Berry Oakely and only because he believed in Duane so much. But when one looks back, it is true that one can change the timing and placement of just one person and it means alot of difference for many other people. I'm sure you showed up to be with the Allman Brothers at just the right time. No doubt they probably wouldn't have made it without you brother!

Hey Voador, you got a tape of the jam in the studio with Clapton, Duane, Dickey, and Berry? This would be just days before Layla was cut.

Willie the Poker player, reminds me of when I saw the GAB in Cleveland (Front Row Theatre) and the next night in Merrilville, IN (holiday star theatre)... circa 84.... I hitched a ride on Gregg's bus.... lost so much playing poker with Willie and -=DDT=- that I commented, "... would have been cheaper to fly" :yep:

Beach plans but the clouds came out. Maybe take a late morning nap. Got a little background on Saturday night video. Those who showed up for the opening shot at the farm waited 3 hours for Gregg. Kirk showed William a video of "The Making of...." a year or so ago. Lots of grumbling going on. Dickey, who I thought was right on the money, threw one of his "throw the guitar down and walk out" fits. There was a lot of concern that there was not enough footage for the program. That's why they filmed Wet Willie in the park the next day. It was total afterthought. I love getting these little stories. Not that it's all that important and earth shattering. Just fun. Good clean fun. Oh yeah, I did get an explanation of how the sun tans in Macon - April and May are the best months. I'm sure y'all were dying to know that! Have a blessed Sunday.
