'And your notion that our economy is "designed" to have a certain amount of unemployment to reduce inflation. You are truly delusional. For one thing our economy is static. There is no grand designer. I can't underscore the absurd stupidity of that assertion enough. But beyond that, are you really stupid enough to think we don't have double digit inflation right now? Please don't tell me you are so stupid that you think the Consumer Price Index reflects the real inflation rate in the US today. ' It really wouldn't take much effort to educate yourself enough to actually refute the point, if it were possible. Are you actually suggesting that monetary policy is not an effective governmental policy tool? Really? 'goals of Federal Reserve' What are the goals of U.S. monetary policy? Monetary policy has two basic goals: to promote "maximum" sustainable output and employment and to promote "stable" prices. These goals are prescribed in a 1977 amendment to the Federal Reserve Act. http://www.frbsf.org/publications/federalreserve/monetary/goals.html Basic economics isn't a great mystery.

I did a lot of environmental emergency response whcih included plane crashes. A good safety plan could have prevented this fire most likely. The use of a LEL meter would have been a good place to begin. Venting of the pipe prior to sawing would have also been a good measure. The use of cutting torches were an absolute no. Our Govt needs to tighten up their safety oversight. We are our own worst enemy sometimes!!!!! Peach.

Here's Some More Information -- I guess it's under control, thankfully... "The Coast Guard said that a Black Elk Energy Co. oil and natural gas platform caught fire after workers using a torch cut a line that had 28 gallons of oil in it, causing an explosion. Black Elk's CEO, John Hoffman, said that the wrong tool was used in cutting the line. Contract workers should have used a saw instead of a torch, which caught vapors and caused the blast. The workers were employees of Grand Isle Shipyard, not Black Elk, he said. The rig was offline for maintenance and was scheduled to go back online for production later this month. There were 22 people on board at the time of the explosion, according to the Coast Guard. An oil sheen a half mile long and 200 yards wide has spread over the water surrounding the platform, which sits in 56 feet of water. The platform was shut down for the work at the time of the accident, Cubanski said. The platform was located about 20 nautical miles southeast of Grand Isle, La., when the explosion happened, Vega said. The explosion and fire comes the day after BP agreed to a $4 billion settlement for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion in the gulf, triggering the worst offshore oil spill in the country's history.

lastly, I'm perfectly comfortable with being labelled an idiot by folks who rest on beliefs that run counter to reality. When you can start referring to actual economic relationships, or historical outcomes in response to governmental policy that supports your claims, you might have something to talk about.

debt as a percent of GDP was much higher in the post WWII period. Close to 150%, compared to under 100% now. If your claim that we can't pay our bills were true, how DID we survive that earlier period (a period of pretty dramatic growth, in fact, though not a function of high debt levels, but was a factor or result of high marginal tax rates)? Reality? Before making claims about others being divorced from reality, you might start providing support for your claims so that your 'reality' can be assessed, credibility-wise.

tell us why and where you think we have strayed from the Bill of Rights, or the Constitution. you might then go on to explain why you believe we can't pay our bills. Indeed, those two points are exactly the sort of bullshit that you've been fed, swallowed, shit out, and formed into something you believe real. It ain't. If the U.S. government were having trouble paying its bills, just WHO would lend it money at zero real rates of interest. If the U.S. government were having problem paying its bills, what is to stop us from paying higher tax levels, as has been the case the last 100 years, most of that time when tax rates were much higher than now. If the U.S. government were having trouble paying its bills, why wouldn't we look at other nations, and the approach they've taken to taxation and social welfare, particularly those countries like Norway, Denmark, Sweden, France, and Canada, ALL of which provide better societies for its citizens than we have here. It's this sort of denial of reality that gets lost in the sort of pundit claims that you're attempting to parrot here.

pintobean, you post as if you believe that there's a job out there for everyone who wants one. That's a pretty good example of the ignorance I'm referring to. If there WAS a job out there for everyone, we'd be dealing with a good deal of inflation. The banks, through their role in the Federal Reserve, ensure that there is some level of unemployment to avoid extreme inflation. That equilibrium level, over time, is somewhere around 5% unemployment. That translates to 7 or 8 million Americans being out of work at any point in time. That shortfall of available jobs relative to the number of Americans seeking work has nothing to do at all with being lazy, or dependent on government. It's a design of the economy that was intended, just as there's a rational and real basis for the social safety net, including unemployment insurance, food stamps, social security and Medicaid. That you describe those not working in such terms is a pretty clear indication that you don't actually understand basic economic arrangements in our society, and explain why you've swallowed conservative bullshit hook, line and sinker. Normally, in a recession, government would borrow, and spend, to offset the decline in economic activity on the private side. In business cycle upturns, when tax receipts are high, governmental debt is then reduced. Pretty basic Keynesian economic concepts that have worked time and again. Just look at the double-dip recession that many european countries are experiencing as a result of the opposite of Keynesian economics, the austerity programs places like Greece, Spain and Portugal are trying, which in each instance is making things way worse.

pintobean, you're embarrassing yourself in displaying such ignorance. There are folks who honestly hold the view that government has a legitimate role in ensuring a stable and productive society. I don't care so much about self-interested morons on TV, or politicians pandering to those willing to make the next campaign contribution, in trying to deny that truth. I pity those in the public who merely swallow the bullshit of conservative pundits and politicians without any concern for whether or not the premises used are actually valid. That seems to be (and is clearly the case with a few here) case for a large portion of those who've bought into the small government / taxes are too high bs. I LOVE that the deluded few have to label liberals as 'extremists'. Pretty good clue that they cannot argue their perspective based on reality, or the way things work, and only have ad hominem arguments available.

well, I wasnt there so I had to rely on what I was told, first hand. I suggest you call Al. Power and ask em yourself. Then, call obama and ask him why millions of people have no food, water, homes, or support. The 'stupid' party would be the people that voted for the incompetent, arrogant, racist, fool curently acting as president.
