I was playing golf about two weeks ago, my cell phone rang. It was brother Charlie Daniels. He was worried about, if I had enough money to eat on and if I needed anything.. I told him I did and I was doing good. He has been a friend for years. I do not think you can find a better person on the planet. He is that group of great people that have hearts as big as the planet. I remember back in 1970 when we were playing in Chattanooga, Tenn. I was setting up and it was about 9 in the morning. There was this kid sitting in a chair in the audience, of course there was no one else in the building but him and us. I hollered out to him what are you doing here. In my Red Dog fun way, trying to mess with him. He replied he was here to see the show. I said well you can't hang out here all day so you better come up here and work with me. He came up and helped me set up. His name is Roger Campbell, funny we had the same last name. He has been my friend ever since, not only that he has been Charlie guitar roadie for some twenty years now. It is a small world after all. I think this is going to be a great night of music on the 14th.

In 1969, someone I had gone to high school was murdered in Upstate NY, presumed that she and her friend were hitching (hitching was common practice ). If I saw hippie freaks (like myself), I would often pick up hitchers in the suburbs. Met lotsa nice folks, but didn't strike up any long term friendships. Just being friendly. At least I knew I wasn't a psycho killer. Mitch

Its breakfast time. I am thinking about the first trip in the Winnie. We played at the electric factory in Philly. then headed for Calif. It was snowing, some of you might remember the story I have told before about the drain pipe for the toilet had frozen up. Well the next morning, we are going down the road snowing like hell. Butch was up early and started fixing Pan cakes. I think these was some of the best pancakes I have ever had. Butch as we say, can burn. That means he can cook. That is a fact. What was nice about it was we never had to stop. Butch fixed pancakes for every one of us then fixed his. Nothing like going down the road and being able to cook and eat at the same time. Funny thing was we had a friend that we called sister Beth. She is from the big apple, and was at the gig in Philly. About 9 o'clock in the morning, as we were headed to calif. there she and a friend were hitch hiking to a friends house in calif. Of course the motto was, if a chick is hitching we stop and pick her up. Which is what we did. Not knowing it was her at first. Nothing like desert after a good meal. Girls hitch hiking was great. One of the best things about Boston. Back in the late 60's and early 70's girls hitched all over Boston. As I said, if a chick is hitching we stop and pick them. We did meet a lot of ladies in Boston that way.

There is a P.J.Clarke's restaurant on 63rd. Menu looks to be American with prices of good range for everyone. ???? Think?

I understand your feelings, Luke. Unfortunately, it takes money to raise money. Later on, when all this is done with and Red Dog is through with his surgery and treatments and is feeling strong enough, we can have a pot luck gig somewhere (we'd have to help you with the money you'd spend on the fixins', Luke, cuz I know you'd cook up a STORM). In the meantime, it costs me no money to raise money, so I'm just gonna stick to my program and tell people to donate via Willie. You got five bucks in your pocket? Stick it in an envelope and send it to the white house on Audubon Drive (see address below).

Luke now you know why I stayed out of all this and had turned it over to others to take care of things. Hell man, I would be giving tickets away, then it would not be a benefit. It would end up being a free gig. Plus I have to many friends to pick this one or that one. I am truly sorry about the way somethings have turned out but it is what it is. I just can not get involved. I got enough on my plate, and it's bouncing me off the walls. Right now I do not need to be worrying about to many things. I would be leading with my heart on this deal. I needed people who could take care of business and not get their feeling involved.

The contributions to the fund for Red Dog that was set up and is being administered by Willie Perkins has just about ground to a halt. At this point, we're looking at about $4,000 and are most grateful to all those who donated. Gratitude also goes out to everyone planning to attend the Cox Theatre event on August 14 in Maconga. However, please remember that there are big expenses connected with this event, so every penny you spend will not go directly to Red Dog. If you were planning to make a contribution and forgot, or if you were not planning to make a contribution thinking that five bucks won't make a difference, this is the time to write a check. Every penny counts and every penny will go directly to Red Dog for his medical expenses. Special note of thanks to Sonnystang who has tirelessly bumped the related threads on the blue site. Those of you who see him in Macon, shake the man's hand. It may be red and sore from all the bumping, so be gentle. DON'T DELAY, GIVE TODAY YOUR MONEY AWAY. I can think of no better cause than our Red Dog. YOU may donate at: Joseph L. Campbell d/b/a/ Red Dog Benefit Fund c/o Willie Perkins 2919 Audubon Drive Macon Ga., 31204 OR AT PayPal @whp0854@webtv.net

Sometimes it hard for me to listen to Duane play on records. I can get emotional, but I finally broke down today and listen to this old song with my friend Wilson and brother Duane. Brought back some memories. There was no greater time, than when I would be driving the winnie going to a gig, and it would be late at night. Duane , Dickey, Gregg , or Berry , one of them would come up and ride shotgun and play guitar to keep me awake. Play for hours. Some of the best playing I ever heard. Oh for the memories of the road. I have and am very lucky to have had such a good life. Good times are still ahead of me, but I will say, they can never touch those nights.

I woke up this morning and my hips hurt so bad I could hardly walk. They still hurt right now. Once I get going after a few steps it gets better. My lungs hurt. I am thinking they stuck the camera down in my lungs to check them out. Stomach hurts when I cough or try to laugh. I felt good last night was thinking about going somewhere, that is how good I felt. It was a great high yesterday and the best thing was, it was legal. Today is rough on the old bod. Throat feels good and they cut on that. Go figure.

I can't get on the other site either. No great shakes. I heard something at one of my meetings this morning that resonated; supposedly it comes from some commercial that I've never seen. Anyway it's "there is no expiration date on the bottom of your foot". I liked that. So, basically, what it meant to me was all we can count on is now, the past is past and we can never be sure about tomorrow so enjoy TODAY!
