Good Morning everyone :sunny:
Well, I guess the consensus is in about the Grammy's and about Dickey not showing up for that.. many make very valid points.,. but at the end of the day.. it is not our business , but we like to discuss it anyway.. Maybe one day he will come on here and type out how he feels.. WOW.. could you only imagine that.
Or perhaps he needs to write it out in BOOK form .. now that is a book I'd be in a anxious hurry to read , more than once. Come on Dickey .. write your story for all of us to read and enjoy.. Please..
Lots of great posts here and Like Ron mentioned Luke you wrote it out great, full of passion and insight to the human nature .. of things. Thanks for sharing 🙂
I can not ask more of DB than what I have already.. Please keep touring and I'll keep coming out to see and the Band.. It is my personal joy and pleasure .. that you give so lovingly to your fans.. Thanks and Happy Valentines Day...

Luke, as much as we've had our public differences, that last post of yours was the best thing I've ever read from you. My compliments, man. Now if you would just learn to hit that damn space bar at least once between sentences us old folks could read it better. Maybe hit it twice. Heh heh.
You are correct Stevechild. Take the Rolling Stones for example. When Bill Wyman quit, they didn't replace him with a full member. They use a hired hand as bass player and their sound is pretty much the same. But if Keith Richards were voted out ( Keith is kind of like Dickey and Mick is like Gregg) the band would be racially different. Yeah the new guy may be a better guitar player but the dynamics, feel & look of the band would be very different. Many older fans wouldn't like it as well. Actually I think the Stones were at their hottest when Mick Taylor was the lead guitar player. Brian Jones was Okay but not a standout lead player.
I find it funny sometimes when I read or hear Butch saying the ABB right now is the best it's ever been. The original lineup was more creative but not as good technically. Butch says Derek Trucks can play circles around Duane Allman and Warren is better than Dickey and Oteil is the best bass player the band has had and since 2001, the ABB finally really evolved into a super group.
But when I listen to Statesboro Blues or Must Have Did Somebody Wrong or Liz Reed from the Fillmore album or the live One Way Out or Trouble No More from Eat A Peach, I just can't imagine the current ABB playing better than that? As a matter of fact, to me, the current ABB doesn't sound as hot as that. The current lineup just doesn't seem to equal the original. Maybe it's because us older fans are use to hearing the original band and that may be it. I have never bought any of those live box sets of the current lineup and other than Brothers & Sisters, I almost always listen to the albums by the original band. And occasionally I'll listen to Seven Turns or Shades of Two Worlds or Where It All Begins or the two live CDs with Warren & Allen in the band. And because Dickey's sound is there, to me, it sounds closer to the original. In your head you know Duane & Berry are dead and not playing but you hear Warren & Woody getting into spirit of Duane & Berry and while not absolutely like the original, it is close. Brothers and Sisters strikes me as the ABB but having to forge a different sound to a degree due to Duane being dead. The first two tracks have Berry on bass then the rest are Lamar Williams and he is very good but plays more like a bass player than Oakley.
But Butch Trucks has said that when they got to Brothers and Sisters, they had suddenly become The Dickey Betts Band and Dickey just dominated their sound until 2001 when they were able to get back to doing it like what Duane started. I can't agree. Hitting the Note sounds less like the ABB than Brothers and Sisters. It sounds like The Gregg Allman Band/Warren Haynes Band.
In a guitar driven band, one with two lead players, there is a big change when one of the originals is gone. When both are gone, it doesn't seem to matter that the main singer is the same and the drums are the same, the change is still big.
I always like the cowbell musician best, but they never play it loud enough. MORE COWBELL!
I don't think the question is about talent but more importantly how important that talent is to the overall sound...
Dickey's is really missing from the ABB sound... If the situation was turned on it's head & butch was out... you could insert for example a Matt Abts & I don't think people would notice as much... I am not denegrating Butch's talent as a musician just stating that the level of difference is much greater when you are factoring the contribution each individual makes in that group
Good Point Mountain... she is quite talented, albeit a little overboard on the costumes, but that is common in the "Business"
Actually 69duane, Lady Gaga is a very
accomplished pianist, so don't knock someone
who you know nothing about. She is an
excellent musician.
Mind blowing...

Dickey is his own man and I for one wil keep my .02 out this last go round! I really wasn't expecting Dickey to show up.. Andfor whatever reasons he has for not going ,I'll respect that. As for the "Little Drummer Boy" He is so full of himself he needs to go away for good and never be heard from again. Kinda looked like he one way to many before he started running off the mouth, What an ASS!
Maybe a little too sappy for some of you but this touched my heart:

And yeppers, Butch needed financial help, so the cash cow was placed back into production.
Remember, the thread was not about Butch's contribution to the ABB; its about the degree to which he contributed when compared to the skillset of Dickey. Rabbit trails created by Prine aside, that was the original focus. TO that end, Butch should be sending flowers to Bett's house every month.
Anyone STILL waiting on their Moogis' refund from last year???
Ahhhh yes, the rhythm section. I'm definitely not gonna bash them for their skills on their instruments.
I remember RedDog writing once how Butch would be right on Betts' notes like a (don't remember his exact analogy) duck on a june bug. (Don't think those were his words, but you get the point.) Dickey and Butch were very much in sync, musically.
Forgot to mention. Great video yesterday Steve. From my hometown of Roanoke. Been to the coffee pot hundreds of times. Unfortunately, not that night though. Musta been in 10th grade at the time. Damn shame. Nice of Dickey to include Butch in on that band.
Despite the hatred that Butch obviously has for Dickey, it's a damn shame he can't/won't admit that Dickey is pretty d*mn responsible for the life he enjoys and the wealth he has accumulated.
JMHO.....so hopefully I won't get slammed too awful bad, but Duane was the leader. He had the vision and was a guitar virtuoso. Gotta be honest though. Dickey WAS the MAN for 28 yrs and wrote the majority of the music of the ABB. Even wrote more than Duane did in the first two years, as no doubt, all of you know.
Dude deserves the BIG props regardless of which site you post on.
Someone tell me if this is true please. Some of the older members might know. I've heard that part of the reason that they started the reunion in '89 was partly due to helping out Butch and his financial situation at the time.
Obviously, that wouldn't be the only reason. I'm sure it would have been financially beneficial for all of them.
I distinclty remember seeing a bio with all of them on TV in the early 90's........interviews and all, family member interviews ( I remember Duane Betts talking about coming home from school and hearing his day playing from like 5 blocks away from the house).....anyway, Butch couldn't have been kissing Dickey's a$$ enough talking about how great he was playing etc. etc.. Sure would love to see that again.
Anyway, the ABB rhythm section. Fabulous for sure. Always dug the rhythm devils in the GD too. Actually, liked them more and felt like they had more going on/diversity during the drums solo's than the boy's in the ABB. Just my opinion.
Panic, Santana, and Moe all do a pretty darn fine job too. Gotta be honest though. When I used to go to the ABB shows especially from 2000-2007 ? I think that was the last one..........jabuma would be time to go talk to a man about a horse, if ya know what I mean.
The boy's could/can definitely hold it down though. Marc was a good pick up, so I'll give Butchy some props for that too.
Duane, Dickey, Berry.
I'm not ambivalent about all this. I wish Dickey could have been there. But since we don't know why he wasn't there, I don't see why everybody is all lathered up about it. The reasons will surface sooner or later, though. Forgot where I heard it but somebody said the only way three people can keep a secret is if two of them are dead.
Have a great week everybody! I'm still psyched about Macon!
This is actually an interesting discussion. I have always felt the ABB percussion played a major role in the sound and intensity of the band music, particularly live. I remember the first time I saw the band in 1973, and I quickly noticed two things-- first, Dickey Betts. Being a novice to the band's history, I did not expect to be blown away by the obvious dominance of Betts as the lead guitar player. BUT--I also noticed the power of the percussion section and remember being mesmerized by their work in Les Brers in A Minor (if I recall, they did a long drum solo in that).
You know, in watching Butch's speech (and working around the significant verbiage), it was clear he was intent on making sure Duane was recognized properly and significantly. I did think that part was cool...the rest I coulda done without.
Betts contributed an awful lot...as did each in their own way. I hope they all continue to make music.
I dont "discount" the rhythm section of the ABB, Moron....
But, lets keep this real. Talent and contributions are, by definition, in layers. ANd its completely appropriate to define any enterprise or activity as such. Did Lennon contribute more to the Beatles than Ringo? YES. His skillset was broader.
Did Betts contribute more to the ABB, by skillset, that Claude? YES HE DID. And in those formative years of the Band, those additional skills paid off for the ABB and put bread on the table for Claude. The fact he cannot bring himself to spout those fact makes me want to puke at the arrogance.
You don't think past your booger-infested, redneck nose Prine. You can't and I understand that is a DNA failing in your bloodline, but try to keep up with the advanced class.
Dunce.
