A native South Carolinian, I had just learned about ABB when I heard there was a band out of Spartanburg coming out with a new album. Well, that was just UNHEARD of in this State. We didn't have a big time ANYTHING in South Carolina! So I managed to procure a cassette tape to play in my cassette tape eating car tape player and it was about a week before the August Jam at Charlotte Motor Speedway with ABB, MTB, ZZ Top, and a gazillion other bands and by the time I got there I was an MTB FAN! I wish I could say I remembered a whole lot about that day, but... Anyway, ol' Toy flicked that thumb of his as fast as a hummingbird wing and had that sh$t kickin' awesome style and tone that hooked me for life. He/they made me so proud to be a South Carolinian. They not only didn't forget their roots, they celebrated them, writing song after song extolling their virtues. The love I have for MTB will never die. I loved original MTB the most, but I have been so happy that Doug has kept them rolling on for so long and I don't give a crap if he sounds awful or if none of the other members are original members, to me they are STILL the Marshall Tucker Band that has always made me proud. God bless you, Toy and Tommy Caldwell, thumb pluckers extraordinaire!

Please excuse me!!...Umm, Dickey's band(s) did continue. We know what happened and it was, and still is, my favorite. I was just reminescing about the ol MBT
Sometimes I'm such a cyber twit!
Hope everybody is well!
Toy's writing, and especially his playing, amazed me and created a vast interest when I first heard the MTB. Those first six albums, in my opinion, created an unmatched longeviity as far as creativity and sheer playing abiliity. These were not albums of three minute hits, but were songs that were allowed to grow and go where they were meant to go. Duane and Dickey's band were cut short with the loss of Duane and Berry, and Lord only knows what may have happened if it had continued. Toy, Tommy, George, and the rest of the great Marshall Tucker Band are some of the best there ever was.
It was a cool transition when Toy "grew into" his big hollow body phase. Many guitarists have used the same combination before and after, but no one can match Toy's Les Paul/Twin Reverb sound.
He owned it!
RIP Toy....
Thanks for reading.
Today marks the date that Toy Caldwell passed away in 1993. I know there are a lot of fans of his on this site and it should not go without mention along with DDT.
If i may reminisce for a bit---i first saw the Marshall Tucker Band at the Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park. I believe the year was 1974, and they were still relatively new to the music scene. Being an Allman Brothers fan, i was already familiar with the "other southern bands" coming on the horizon at that time. I can remember sitting near the front of a not sold out venue, and watching MTB come on and blow the doors off the joint. I was with a good friend and we agreed it was one of the most fun and energetic shows we had seen in a long time.
I saw them a number of times over the next few years in the NYC area, frankly as many times as i could. They were a great band, and Toy along with Tommy and the rest of the crew were just so gracious to their crowds. RIP Toy
Thanks, Capn. I watched about 3/4 of this and had to tear myself away to get to an appointment. So many great images and the music is perfect. One impression I'm left with is that Dan was a fountain of creatity.

Not familiar with Wylko Johnson but he was diagnosed with cancer over a year ago, told he had only about 8 months, decided against cancer treatments and to enjoy his time left by recording a last album like Warren Zevon. Roger Daltry decided to help him out and the result is pretty stunning. Here's a very interesting interview with the two of them and one of their tracks on youtube. BTW, Wylko's still going strong about a year and a half after the diagnosis!

Yeah, Dan, enjoyed perusing that site. Thanks!
On the ultimate classic rock web site they have a list of duo guitar players. Duane & Dickey(nat) and Duane and Eric. That site is so much better than that damn rolling stone mag/site!
Walter glad you enjoyed it! I was so excited to find and share a Duane video that hadn't already been posted here! 🙂
