Heading out to Peachfest 2014 in Scranton, PA with Warren Haynes/Gov't Mule/Allman Brothers/Tedeschi Trucks Band and many more bands started last nite thru Sunday. Last week we all went to see Warren at PNC Arts Center in NJ with that 70 piece symphonic orchestra and I am still in awe of the mystical nite we all had and the beautiful nite breezes flowing thru with Warren's voice permeating the air, there are no words to explain...thank you to Warren for the hospitality...your love and friendship could not have come at a better time!

Excellent comments on the subject of rhythm, folks!! Lennon had a great strumming hand, for sure. As did Weir, McCorkle, Cobb, Haynes, Foggerty, Allman, Ed King....um...this list could grow quite long.
Very insightful interview with Dickey, but theres not one mention of playing rhythm guitar.
My favorite rock singer, too, Mitch.
Always thought that John Lennon was a terrific rhythmn guitarist. Different genre than DB, but if you try to isolate John's playing with The Beatles, he was very creative.
Mitch
Any discussion on rhythm guitar playing should should include the improbable Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. That was his primary role playing around Jerry and even Phil, and he was at a minimum under rated. Garcia once gave him the ultimate compliment in that Weir's style was uniquely his no matter what influences he may have had.
I particularly enjoy the earlier years of Weir's work like around 71-72, lot's of great music embedded in that period. For some reason Weir became more "screechy" in later years but you guitar players out there could probably expand on the instrumental reason for that.
When you listen to Fillmore East and that era stuff, you can hear so often where Dickey is playing a tasty framework on rhythm that Duane is operating in and around playing straight lead or slide. It is easy to focus on the lead guitar on the Fillmore stuff but it is cool fixating on who is playing rhythm and what they are layin' down. Duane also played some great rhythm backing.
The first rhythm guitar player I recall being aware of was Elvin Bishop when he was with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Then I realized that he wasn't really a rhythm player - he was just a guitar player (and a damned good one) working with another player to propel whatever tune they were playing along whatever the desired path might have been.
That is the same thing that Dickey has done. He's just another damned good guitar player working with another (or more) to set the mood of a tune and move it along the desired path.
That is not to say that there aren't guitar skills that specifically go along with playing "rhythm," although the most important of those is a skill that is needed for playing in a band on any instrument - the ability to listen.
All that said, my favorite all-time rhythm player is Bobby Weir.
Here is great interview from another great guitarist. I especially love what he says at the 1:40 mark. I totally agree with him.

This is the interview where Dickey discusses his rhythm playing:

Yes too bad for you Walter, music piracy is still illegal.
GO BUY THE CD MOMO
You don't put any money in the man's pocket at concerts, at least buy an album here an there FREELOADER.
Perfect, Dobro! Unfortunately, it's been removed from youtube.
nacm you da man and it was great talking to you the other day. 🙂
Hey Ya'll!
One of my favorite rhythm guitar moments of all time is the original album cut of Pegasus. From the intro, Dickey's strumming flows like honey. Dangerous Dan put that chirping on the top to counterpoint and it worked so well. Danny's solo was just about as perfect as it could get, but more often than not, I find myself listening to Dickey's rhythm until the end of the organ solo.
Our Boy plays "Lead Rhythm".
nacm, check pm's, please.
