Dickey Betts describes how it all began http://youtu.be/pXJqr8yKWDE And damn every single one of those guys if they try to end it without Dickey. He should be on that stage at the Beacon this month.

Glad you had a good time, Mike. I saw GA&F at a very small intimate venue in Charleston, SC, several years ago with Robben Ford and Willie Weeks on guitar and bass. Quite a show and I think the band is even stronger now.

Went and saw Gregg and his band Friday at the Gretna Festival... Great show and Gregg sounded strong and was talkitive and was out there having a good time. The 9 piece band was virually flawless and the arrangements were great. Big sound with horns and it made for a special night. Had a large appreciative audience and Gregg expressed his love of New Orleans and all the fans who came out. His voice is one of a kind much like the tone of Dickey's guitar. The ying and yang of the two that made the ABB catalog what it was. Have a great week... EAPFP Sing While I'm :walk:

Overall judgement of talent is definitely subjective! Metronomes, however, are not. 🙂

"without good timing there can be no groove." How true, how true. Like the musicians say in NOLA, "Get in the pocket." That said, in many respects whether a person has talent on the guitar is an intensely subjective matter. Same say I do, some say I don't. Sometimes I think I do, sometimes I think I don't - and other times I think I'm just mediocre. Regardless, I just keep on playing.

Just being honest, you should know that guy has real bad timing. If you don't feel it, check his left leg out as it tells the story. I like that song and his tone, but without good timing there can be no groove. I'm pointing this out Walter not only because I love to bust your balls, but because it seems like you care about playing and getting better. This guy can be a fun musical partner for ya but as far as guitar hero's go this is not worthy of the pedestal you put him on. Garbage in, garbage out as the saying goes...

Hey, Neil! Matt's a prince! This was the 3rd occasion I've had to play with him. The first time I was so scared I forgot where I was, the second time, there were two other guitars so it didn't matter, and this time it was him and a guy on keys in front of maybe 25 people so I had to hold it together a little bit or die! I really enjoyed it and he actually said he really enjoyed my version of Sugaree an awful lot and was going to work that into his setlist to do the same tempo and all. Of course, he was the one who made it sound good in the first place, not me! Here's a solo video of him playing in a park in Columbia a couple years ago so you can get an idea of his ability. He's written and recorded about 10 cd's of material - 2 solo and 8 with Jupiter Coyote. http://youtu.be/xO7rFZg09Kk

Walter - it is always really cool to play guitar with great players. The truly great ones make you play better and don't make you feel inferior. For me recently with Buddy Whittington (he has played with john Mayall for at least 15 years - I'm sure I misspelled his name) and long ago with Sonny L.

Great to see all the great long time fans back on the guestbook, which is here mainly for you! I really enjoy all of your comments. I was lucky to get to play with Matt Mayes of Jupiter Coyote this weekend, one of the better guitarists on the planet. It was sort of an out of body experience I couldn't believe was happening. The guy plays like a gorilla with eight fingers on each hand flying up and down the neck as fast as a hummingbird wing!
